A woman has taught the internet how to properly use the three compartments of a front-loading washing machine in a now-viral video.
Ann Russel posted a video to TikTok responding to a woman who had asked the most basic of laundry questions – where does the detergent go?

“Can I just confirm that nobody knows which one to put the washing detergent in?” the woman had asked, as she pointed to her machine’s three compartments.
Russel, whose TikTok account annrussell03 is dedicated to sharing cleaning tips and hacks, then responds to the question, enlightening her 2.3 million followers.
“They’re marked,” she said simply.
Russel then provides more detail about the function of each compartment.
“The one with the flower on it is fabric softener,” she explains.
“The one with a ‘one’ mark on it is pre wash.
“The one with the ‘two’ mark on it is for the main wash.”
But the pre wash function left many confused.
“What is pre wash,” one person commented.
Another said: “I never used the pre wash function in my entire life.”
But Russel says pre wash isn’t used very often.
In a later video, she explained that this was a “little short wash” designed to lift stains before the main wash.
“If you’ve got a really dirty football kit from the kids or you’ve been gardening – you put it in a pre wash,” she said.
“It … gets the dirt loosened and the surface dirt comes off … ready for the main wash.”
Russel’s video about the three compartments reached 1.4 million views.
“Oh. Well then. I’ve never ‘main washed’ any of my clothes,” one said, realising their mistake.
Another praised Russel: “What would we do without you!!!”
One person was ready to destroy their machine: “I just put a bit in each one.”
But others were baffled that people weren’t aware how to properly use their machine.
“People’s inability to read and follow basic instructions is mind boggling,” one said.
“Can we just confirm that no one has read the instructions, yeah?” another commented
While a third wrote: “Can’t believe people are unaware of something so simple.”
