The latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBooks claim battery life up to 22 hours and add Wi-Fi 6E.
The M2 Pro and M2 Max versions of Apple’s M-series processors have been added, and the upgraded 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models as well as the Mac Mini desktop are now available with these chips.
The M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max chips from the previous models are replaced by these new chips in the new MacBooks and Mac Mini, which have the same design as their predecessors.
Apple claims in a press statement that “M2 Pro expands up the M2 architecture to provide up to a 32GB of fast unified memory, a 12-core CPU, and a 19-core GPU. By adding a 38-core GPU, doubling the unified memory bandwidth, and supporting up to 96GB of unified memory, M2 Max expands on the features of M2 Pro.”
MacBook Pro adds M2 Pro/Max
When the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro computers were introduced in October 2021, a change from the prior MacBooks’ softly bent lids to a more structured, squared-off form with a flat lid and sharp corners became apparent. These computers also lacked the touchbar interface found on earlier MacBook Pro models; only the 2022 M2 13-inch MacBook Pro retains this functionality along with the vintage appearance and feel (for now).
Apart from the new processor generation, the major difference is Apple’s boast of a battery life of up to 22 hours, which it calls “the longest battery life ever in a Mac.” The MacBook Pro now has Wi-Fi 6E, an upgrade from Wi-Fi 6, and an HDMI connector that can now handle 4K and 8K screens at up to 240Hz and 60Hz, respectively.
According to Apple, the performance of the M2 Pro processor is up to 40% quicker than the M1 Pro in terms of processing images in Photoshop, while the M2 Max can render effects in Cinema 4D and color grade images in DaVinci Resolve up to 30% faster than the M1 Max.
The new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro starts at $1,999, and the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro starts at $2,499.
Mac Mini gets its first update since 2020
The M1 processor was included to the Mac Mini in 2020, which marked a break from Intel. Both the M2 and M2 Pro processors are included in the latest version.
According to Apple, the M2 version of Photoshop can perform up to 50% quicker than the M1 version and 2.4 times faster in Final Cut Pro’s transcoding, while the M2 Pro edition of Final Cut Pro can perform up to 4.2 times faster than the M1 Mac Mini. There was no direct comparison between the Mac Mini and the M1 Pro.
A variant of the Intel Mac Mini, which was still available (along with the M1 version) until this announcement, has likewise been discontinued by Apple. The only remaining Intel-based Mac that you can buy straight from Apple is the Mac Studio desktop. If you really, certainly must have one, several merchants, like Best Buy, still carry the Intel Mac Mini.
The new model has an M2 version that starts at $599 and an M2 Pro variant that starts at $1,299.
Apple says both the new Mac Mini and MacBook Pro are available to order starting Jan. 17 and will start arriving to customers and stores on Jan. 24.
And no, despite some recent rumors, no touchscreen yet.
