Sony’s PS5 fans are looking for its own faceplates to be released shortly
Sony has applied for a patent on its PlayStation 5 faceplates. The design patent was first submitted barely a week before the PS5’s November debut, and it was then published on November 16th by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). It’s fueling rumors that Sony will make its own PS5 faceplates or skins.
The design patent was discovered by OP Attack more than a year after Matt MacLaurin, Sony’s former VP of UX design, hinted to a black PS5 or “a special edition for everyone” in an interview. Sony has made black versions of its DualSense controller and Pulse 3D Audio headset, but the PS5 system is still white.
Third-party companies have tried to fill the hole left by the black faceplates, but Sony has threatened legal action. Following legal action from Sony, a tiny firm known as PlateStation5 and subsequently CustomizeMyPlates was compelled to cancel and refund purchases for black PS5 faceplates last year. CustomizeMyPlates resurfaced early this year and continues to sell personalized plates.
Others for Making Them
Despite the legal action, DBrand continued to sell matte black faceplates and even dared Sony to sue. After Sony threatened DBrand with legal action, the firm was forced to remove their faceplates and replace them with a new design and a marketing campaign mocking Sony’s legal staff.
On at least two different occasions since the launch of the PlayStation 5, Sony has threatened companies with legal action over their plans to sell unofficial faceplates to consumers. Last year the company Customize My Plates announced that it was canceling all pre-sales of its custom-ready PS5 faceplates following legal pressure from Sony.
In a statement to IGN, the company explained that its decision had come following discussions with Sony’s legal team, where it became apparent that trademarks over the console’s removable side panels were too complex an issue for the company to navigate without risking legal infringement.
